Digital Photograph SoftwareBy Joshua Erdman I have had a digital camera since my wedding in August 2001. Since then we have taken many pictures (especially after my son was born). Recently my wife has taken an interest in giving friends and family printed pictures and photo albums. After playing around with MANY photo programs she has also found that some have the ability to create online Internet photo albums. But organizing over a 1,000 pictures and putting the ones we like in print and online formats creates alot of work. We would have to switch between the programs provided with our camera, our computer, and our printer to accomplish all this, and even then, these programs do not perform any of these jobs very well. Organizing PicturesWith so many pictures, how do you organize them all? Pictures taken of our camping trip could be filed under vacations, for example, but how do you file pictures taken with relatives during visits? Should they be filed in the vacation folder for the trip that we took to visit these relatives or should they be filed under family pictures? A computer's file structure does not easily allow you to organize pictures in multiple categories. The ultimate photo organizing solutionAdobe Photoshop Album 2.0 creates a great way for organizing pictures. How you store your images on your hard drive do not matter, you just import the pictures from your camera, CD, Floppy, hard drive, or scanner. Photoshop Album immediately checks the file date and will classify the pictures in a timeline accross the top of the screen. You can then 'tag' your pictures declaring the categories in which they belong. With this software you can put one image in multiple categories, provide a description, and perform quick and easy searches. All this is done without having the image being copied in multple locations. Adobe Photoshop Album also keeps track of image revisions keeping your originals unchanged. You can get Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition for free at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/starter.html. Editing PicturesThe other problem we ran into was editing our photos. Many times we needed to remove red-eye or brighten and crop pictures. As with all digital cameras they come with some editing software, so do printers and scanners. Out of all these programs, which one do you use? Professionals use Adobe Photoshop. This is the best program for editing photos, removing moles and grey hair, and fixing brightness issues. But even though Adobe Photoshop is the ultimate photo editing software it has an overwhelming amount of tools and it would definitley be considered overkill for just modifying amateur photographs. As a consumer, using Adobe Photoshop is like having $10,000 worth of tools in your garage just to change the oil in your car. The ultimate photo editing softwareAdobe Photoshop Elements. To create this masterpiece, Adobe started with their powerful Photoshop program and then simplified it by only including the most commonly used photograph editing tools and filters. Then they wrapped it with a wizard that makes it easy to perform many photo editing tasks. Not only is this a great value (around $100) but it is a great way to learn the Adobe Photoshop tools if you ever plan on becoming a Graphic Artist. "I like Elements because its not overwhelming and it gives you tutorials that walk you through
using each tool." CostThese programs will cost about twice as much as other digital photography programs that you can find online ar at your local Staples or Office Depot (like Broderbund's PrintShop). Just keep in mind that you get what you pay for; we have already spent at least $50 in software that I am now throwing away. You can click the links above to buy this software now.
