Open Business License Plan

By Joshua Erdman
Digital Foundation, inc.

Open Business is a very straight forward and simple program. Software Assurance is not required to be purchased unlike the Open Value Plan. However, Software Assurance is offered as a 2-year option. In short, Open Business is the method to buy things as low cost as possible without paying extra for the benefits of Open Value (Employee Purchase Program, Training, Home Use Licensing, etc.).

Other than the difference in benefits, some businesses choose Open Value because they are allowed to make 3 annual payments for the licensing costs, Open Business requires full payment up front.

Clue: Open Business is a great program for any company looking to purchase expensive licenses as cheaply as possible.

Purchasing Licenses without Software Assurance

Microsoft is no longer offering upgrades in their bulk licensing packages. If you are concerned about obtaining upgrades to keep your software current you have two options. Purchase your licenses with Software Assurance and renew your software assurance when your agreement expires or when the new version is released, purchase the Upgrade via a Retail License (this will be quite more expensive about the same cost as the full version in the bulk license).
