Anti-VirusBy Joshua Erdman Having a computer without Anti-Virus Software is as foolish as walking through the Congo without a malaria vacine. All computers can easily be exposed to a computer virus. This includes computers at home, at work, and at school. Viruses propogate in so many different ways, you are better off installing anti-virus software that will protect your computer than attempting to avoid exposure to a viral threat. In other words, if you use the Internet, read e-mail, stick floppy disks or CD-ROMs in your computer, or use wireless you NEED anti-virus software. Type of Anti-VirusAnti-Virus Software varies in features mostly depending on the environment it will be installed in. If you are trying to protect many computers (At least 5) then you will want to get some type of network managed business edition. If you are trying to protect your home or small office computer(s) an individual copy for each computer will do fine. Small/Home Office Anti-VirusI always recommend Norton or McAffee Anti-Virus for my consumer clients. They both are easy to use and have automated features. All my clients maintaining the current versions have yet to get infected. It is common to find this software wrapped with the purchase of a new computer, you can even purchase it online. Business Anti-VirusFor our business clients, Digital Foundation installs a network managed version of Norton Anti-Virus, called Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition. Depending on the customer's budget we might install Symantec Anti-Virus Enterprise Edition that has gateway and e-mail server filtering as well. This type of business anti-virus allows us to pull reports of all computers and ensure they are using the newest virus definitions. Please go to our software services page for more information. We also have a list of current virus threats. Article last reviewed: 12/30/2005
