What Is MalWare

By Joshua Erdman
Digital Foundation, inc.

MalWare (malicious software) is an insidious threat creeping up on computer users. MalWare is a more general term that includes Adware, spyware, and scumware - these terms refer to their specificly designed function.

Most MalWare is used to monitor browsing/shopping habits of the computer's user, or to display advertisements. Some are designed to force you into visiting certain webpages to exploit the pay-per-hit nature of internet advertising. Most people have had the experience of having their homepage hijacked, or having a new screensaver suddenly installed. Or even having their dns point all search engines towards some third-rate search page. All this effort in creating and distributing Malicious Software is for the intent of making the creators money.

A recent article in Wired magazine claims that spyware is becoming the leading problem tech support has to deal with. We're going to go over how to protect yourselves from this menace and how to remove the 'malware' once it's on your system.

Prevention

There are a few simple steps you can take to reduce your risks of contracting MalWare. Keep your PC up to date and do not click yes/no buttons on pop-up windows in the first place. Read our prevention article for more information.
